Big labor unions are not as big and powerful as they once were. The labor movement is reeling because of a number of factors. Companies are staying small in terms of employees, thus keeping their business off the radar of labor organizations. Cost cutting by the businesses force labor costs down. Benefit packages are less appealing. And the constant threat of businesses shutting down keep labor strikes at a minimum. All of which means the primary practices of the labor unions are held in check.
The political activities of the unions have many workers demanding accountability. Many unions have aligned themselves with other left leaning groups which many workers do not want to support or agree with. The recent rash of corruption at some of the largest unions has also turned away potential members.
The appeal of job security through unions is not a guarantee. And the overall practices, operational and management, of the unions are also taken into question.
All of this has lead to a continued decline in union jobs and less clout in the workplace. Unions are not the voice it once was, and unless the unions clean their act up, unions will never be what it once was.
